How to use the OUT of BOUNDS Photoshop actions

Learn how to use the Out of Bounds actions for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

Installing and running Photoshop actions.

My Photoshop actions are distributed as downloadable zip files. To use the actions, you must unzip these files first. A folder containing the actions will be created upon decompressing the zip file.

What is the Actions panel?

The actions panel is an interface that allows you to load, run (execute), create and store Photoshop actions. If the panel is not visible select Window > Actions from Photoshop’s main menu. The image below shows some fundamental terms and functions of the actions panel:

photoshop actions panel details

How do I load and run Photoshop actions?

The image below highlights the steps you need to follow, in order to load and run Photoshop actions:

Installing Photoshop actions

  1. Click on the panel’s menu button and select "Load Actions" from the fly-out menu. Load the actions file.

  2. Photoshop actions are contained within actions sets. An action set may contain one ore more actions. Action sets have a small folder icon to the left of their names. If you can’t see the actions contained in the set, click the little triangle to the left of the folder icon to expand the contents.

  3. Click an action within the set. If your click on the set name instead of an action, the Play button appears grayed out: if you move the mouse pointer over the Play button it will be turned into a circle with a diagonal line. So, make sure that you have clicked an action and not the set name.

  4. Click the Play button to execute the action.

To remove an action set from the actions panel, simply click on the set and then click on the bin icon at the bottom of the panel. This won’t delete the action file from your hard disk; it will merely unload the action from Photoshop.

Other ways of loading actions in Photoshop:

  • Use Windows Explorer (PC) or Finder (Mac) to navigate to the actions folder and double click the action thumbnail. Photoshop will open and the actions will be loaded in the actions panel.  If Photoshop doesn't open, then for some reason Photoshop action files (.atn) are not associated with Photoshop anymore. In this case please refer to your OS instructions to re-associate the .atn files with Photoshop.

  • You can drag the file thumbnail onto Photoshop's work area. The actions will be loaded automatically in the actions panel.

Installing and running actions in Photoshop Elements.

My Photoshop Elements actions are distributed as downloadable zip files. Download the file inside the "PanosFX" folder and unzip it. A folder containing the actions will be created. You may now delete the zip file. To load the actions in Photoshop Elements, we will use the "Actions Panel":

What is the Actions Panel?

The actions panel is an interface that allows you to load, execute (Play), and unload Photoshop actions. To view the Actions Panel, you must work in Expert mode. To switch to Expert mode click the respective button at the top of work area:
PSE-expert-mode
If the Actions Panel is not visible select Window > Actions from Photoshop’s main menu.

Photoshop actions are contained within actions sets: when you load an actions file in the actions panel, the actions set name is displayed along with a little yellow folder on its left. You can also see the actions contained in this set. A set may contain one or more actions:

action set photoshop elements

How do I load and use actions in Photoshop Elements?

The image below highlights the four steps you need to follow, in order to load and run actions in Photoshop Elements:pse11-actions-panel

  • Click the menu button (step 1) to reveal the pop-out menu.

  • Select "Load Actions" (step 2). Navigate to the folder where you saved the actions set and load the "filename.atn" file.

  • Select an action from the set (step 3).

  • Click the Play button (step 4).

NOTE: If you select the action set instead of an action within the set, the Play button will appear grayed out!

All you have to do is reset the preferences file contents using the instructions below.

Important note: if you have created any custom styles, brushes, shapes, keyboard shortcuts, etc, please save them prior to resetting the preferences!

Uninstalling older/trial versions of PanosFX actions

Before installing the latest version of an action set (free or commercial), I recommend you check if you have an older (or trial) version installed in Photoshop and remove it prior to installing the new one.
The filenames of all PanosFX add-ons begin with these 3 letters: PFx . This allows you to easily identify any PanosFX add-ons loaded in Photoshop's panels, and locate the respective files stored in your hard disk.

STEP 1: UNLOAD THE OLD / TRIAL ACTION SET FROM PHOTOSHOP'S ACTION PANEL:

Click to select the action set (1); then click on the panel's recycle bin icon to dispose of the set (2):
how to unload an actions set from the actions panel

TIP: You may hold down the Control key (PC) or the cmd key (Mac) to select multiple action sets.

STEP 2: DELETE THE OLD / TRIAL FILES FROM YOUR HARD DISK:

Removing the actions from the actions panel will merely unload them from Photoshop / PS Elements. It won't delete the respective files in the hard disk. To delete the files, navigate to the folder where you keep the PanosFX files. If you don't remember where you stored the files, perform a file search:
  • Mac users: press Ctrl-space to invoke spotlight; enter pfx and wait a few seconds. When the search is complete, scroll down and click on "Show all in Finder".
  • Windows users: open File Explorer. Navigate to the root directory of your hard disk (e.g. C:). Enter pfx in the search box at the upper-right corner and wait a few seconds.
Select the old (or trial) file versions and delete them.

STEP 3: INSTALL THE NEW FILES IN YOUR HARD DISK AND LOAD THEM TO PHOTOSHOP:

Download the latest version. All files are delivered in zip format. Move the zip file into the folder where you keep the PanosFX files and double click to decompress it. Keep the zip file as a backup. Finally, load the actions in Photoshop / PS Elements, using the menu button which is located on the upper right corner of the actions panel.

Switch temporarily to the English Photoshop version.

A few of our actions contain certain commands that run in the English Photoshop version only. Such actions are: the 3D Jigsaw Puzzles, the animated version of the Projection Screen, the 3B Bars & Tiles.

It's very easy to switch temporarily to the English locale. Here's what you need to do:

  • Close Photoshop.
  • Navigate inside the ‘Support Files’ folder. The two screenshots below show the full path to this folder, in Windows and macOS, respectively:

NOTE: if you have Photoshop CS6 Extended, look for ‘Adobe Photoshop CS6’ instead of ‘Adobe Photoshop CC’

tw10428DAT path win

tw10428DAT path macos

  • Select the tw10428.DAT file. Press F2 (PC) or Return (macOS) and rename it to tw10428BACKUP.DAT
  • Restart Photoshop; the Photoshop language will switch to English.

You can now use the actions that require the English Photoshop locale, such as the 3D Puzzles or the 3D Bars. To restore the original language simply rename the file tw10428BACKUP.DAT to tw10428.DAT

If you switch frequently between your locale and the English locale you can use this technique:

  • If you have Windows, right-click the 'Support Files' folder and select 'Copy' from the pop-up menu. I'm reminding you that this is the folder that contains the tw10428.DAT file. Then go to your desktop, right-click on an empty area and select 'Create shortcut'. The next time you wish to rename the tw10428.DAT file, all you have to do is double click the shortcut and rename the DAT file, instead of digging your hard disk to find it.

  • If you have macOS, right-click the 'Support Files' folder and select 'Make Alias' from the pop-up menu. I'm reminding you that this is the folder that contains the tw10428.DAT file. Move the alias folder onto your desktop, or to any other folder that is easy for you to access. The next time you wish to rename the tw10428.DAT file, all you have to do is double click the alias and rename the DAT file, instead of digging your hard disk to find it.
